DESCRIPTION
This issue is the second edition of the journal Frapotel, launched by the Association for the Preservation of the Domaine de Frapotel. Since 2020, the Association for the Preservation of the Domaine de Frapotel has been developing a cultural program focused on architecture, landscape, and design, centered around the Villa Weil, a masterpiece by architect Jean Dubuisson dating from 1966.
A place for living and creating, the estate has welcomed young architects who have won the Academy of Fine Arts’ biennial Charles Abella Prize every year since 2025, from August through October.
This second issue explores the history of on-site artist residencies, their approaches, and their work. It examines architectural residencies throughout history, as well as those of the Charles Abella Prize, organized in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts and supported by the Association.
The contributions in this issue offer a variety of perspectives and experiences: an interview by art historian Frédéric Prot with Dominique Perrault and Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost; a text by Emmanuel Bérard on the design and layout of the residencies at the Domaine de Frapotel; an account by Galaad van Daele, the first resident at the Domaine; as well as a reflection by Benjamin Lafore, Sébastien Martinez-Barat, and Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou, co-curators of the Prize and the exhibition Émulations – Architecture Competition of the Academy of Fine Arts – Charles Abella Prize, who revisit the history of the residences and highlight the projects of the young architects who won the competition.
