DESCRIPTION
In its simplicity, in its minimalist gesture, the cabin stands as a sentinel of tradition, offering a distinctly Japanese celebration of simplicity. This small, cubic pavilion, housing a traditional loom in the outdoor gallery of a contemporary art museum, is the guarantor of an ancestral technique that remains timeless. It appears as a refuge, a basho (Japanese for “place”) where modern materials meet a millennia-old technique. The bronze-colored mesh panels are suspended from the structure like sheets or a mosquito net, protecting this Japanese spirit.
Selected by a jury composed of Hiroshi Hara, architect, Ryue Nishizawa, architect (SANAA), and Fram Kitawaga, director of the Triennale, the project was exhibited from July 29 to September 21, 2018, in the outdoor gallery of the Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokamachi, Japan. The various pavilions together formed an architectural micro-village.
