DESCRIPTION
In the heart of Paris, the Île de la Cité is home to iconic monuments such as the Hôtel-Dieu, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Sainte-Chapelle, the Palais de Justice, and the flower market. Yet this core of the Parisian capital remains a little-known place, at odds with its status as the heart of the metropolis.
EN SAVOIR PLUS ⨁
In December 2015, at the request of French President François Hollande, Dominique Perrault and Philippe Bélaval, president of the Centre des monuments nationaux, initiated a review to rethink the Île de la Cité by 2040. How can this UNESCO-listed site, now neglected by Parisians, be modernized to breathe new life and mobility into it?
Drawing on archival documents, sketches, engravings, maps, and photographs, this book develops proposed responses and highlights the various redevelopment projects for the island that have been imagined throughout history, while questioning its current role. To reintegrate this extraordinary site into the city of tomorrow, thirty-five proposals aim to restore the island to a central position, notably by highlighting its exceptional heritage, redesigning traffic flow between its various centers of gravity, and exploiting its basements and foundations as well as its riverside roads.
