Nicknamed the Lightwalk, the Gangnam International Transit Centre (GITC) is a vast underground complex located in the heart of Seoul’s central business district. This project of exceptional scale, influence, and design is being led by the city of Seoul.
Its hybrid form, sculpted into the urban landscape like a vast piece of land art, introduces an entirely new typology at the intersection of infrastructure, urban planning, and architecture. As a pioneering intermodal urban hub, it signals a new era in metropolitan development. The extension of the dense urban fabric below the surface is part of the city’s emerging response in its pursuit of solutions that prioritize nature and pedestrians. This remarkable work of public infrastructure represents the culmination of a project developed over more than two years and the result of close collaboration between Dominique Perrault and the Junglim consortium.
Innovative and connected, radiating like a rhizome far beyond its boundaries, it is perfectly suited to current and future needs tied to the growing scale and complexity of our metropolitan areas.
