SYNOPSIS
This book offers a reflection on the architecture of the ‘Groundscape’. It is an idea, a concept, that Perrault Architecture has been exploring and experimenting with for years, both in its projects and through its fictional works.
Through numerous international competitions and a series of projects spanning the 1980s – from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France to Ewha University – the notion of the ‘Groundscape’ has established itself as a generic concept, a genuine extension of the field of architecture and, even more so, as a genuine programme. A subject of research at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the “Groundscape” is a landscape of a different kind, a resourceful place that extends and broadens our world.
In “Groundscapes – Other Topographies”, Dominique Perrault takes a stand. His writing is committed and thought-provoking, presenting his original ideas as a space for dialogue and exchange, complemented by a wealth of illustrations that the reader discovers as they turn the pages. The result of interviews with Frédéric Migayrou, the book explores all the issues raised by the ‘Groundscape’ (from fiction as a creative method to questions of ecology, engineering, urban planning and geography…). The architect thus attempts to sketch out the contours of a new urbanity; a universe of possibilities, of unprecedented places—existing, to be imagined or to be created.
“A writing of the real, an underground architecture where it is not a question of living underground but of inscribing living spaces into the earth, this epidermis of the ground open to the sky.”
