SYNOPSIS
This richly illustrated book offers a critical examination of what constitutes a turning point in Perrault’s creative development: the construction of the Velodrome and the Olympic Swimming Pool in Berlin, a key manifestation of an architectural exploration aimed at rethinking the landscape.
It examines his recent work, characterised by a constant focus on research into architectural language and the relationship between public and private spaces, in an attempt to chart a ‘third way’ — an approach that favours integration with the environment, where the geographical context and experimentation take precedence over historical considerations. The volume presents two very recent projects currently under way, launched in 2004 and 2003 respectively: the Ewha Women’s University Campus in Seoul, Korea, and the new Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. These projects, along with others such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the extension of the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg, and the Vénissieux Media Library, have confirmed Dominique Perrault’s place among the most significant figures in contemporary architecture.
