SYNOPSIS
At a time of major change, the story of 57 Métal – a key part of Boulogne-Billancourt’s industrial heritage – illustrates the shift from a mindset of demolition to one of building regeneration. Built in 1984 by the architect Claude Vasconi, this iconic building with its sawtooth roofs was part of the ‘Billancourt 2000’ urban development project, which was halted when Renault left the site.
The book traces the building’s gradual conversion and the various stages of its transformation. Thanks to the involvement of BNP Paribas Real Estate and the architect Dominique Perrault, the 57 Métal has been preserved and transformed into ‘Métal 57’, an innovative office building that opens out onto the city.
This project thus illustrates the challenge of preserving remarkable industrial architecture whilst adapting it to new uses.
