To preserve the view of the natural landscape of Budapest’s Városliget Park, the Museum of Ethnography blends into the site in the form of a thick glass floor that sits flush with the park’s surface, creating the illusion of a shimmering body of water.

PROGRAM
Housed within a 4,558-square-meter glass prism, the Museum of Ethnography features reception and information areas that interact directly with the public space. Beneath this prism, a spacious foyer—which offers a visual connection to the storage areas—leads, via large auditoriums, to the third and deepest level, which comprises 21,600 square meters of exhibition space.

This reflective surface enhances the presence of the 1956 Revolution Memorial, amplifying its impact through the play of reflections. As one approaches, this seemingly liquid expanse reveals itself to be, in fact, a glass prism.
This installation, which diffracts light and images in relation to the public space, invites visitors to enter a world where light becomes architecture. Once inside, visitors move between heaven and earth, floating weightlessly above the museum’s layout.
